Sunderland dump out Premier League Cup holders Leeds

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Women's Premier League Cup holders Leeds United went out of the competition, losing 3-1 after extra time at league leaders Sunderland.

Second in the table Blackburn Rovers were shock 4-0 losers at Northern Division side Leicester City.

Southern Division's West Ham United also produced a surprise against top flight opponents, beating Reading 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

Nottingham Forest thrashed Southern Division Gillingham 5-0.

Southern Division Portsmouth came from 3-0 behind to win 5-4 against Northern Division Aston Villa.

Millwall Lionesses, Barnet and Southern Division Cardiff City won their ties to make up the quarter-final draw.

Sunderland 3-1 Leeds United (aet)

Kelly McDougall put Leeds in front after nine minutes, but it took the visitors only four minutes to level the scores through Gemma Bonner.

The tie remained even into the second period of extra time, but goals within five minutes of each other by McDougall and Gemma Wilson ensured a home victory.

Leicester City 4-0 Blackburn Rovers

Goals either side of half-time by Vicky Gallagher put Leicester on the way to their stunning victory.

Natasha Meade stretched the lead just after the hour and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk completed the scoring with a tremendous 25-yard striker two minutes from time.

Gillingham 0-5 Nottingham Forest

Lawson hit the first three goals as Forest showed their top flight pedigree to breeze into the quarter-finals.

Jemma Connor-Iommi scored goal number four midway through the second half and the visitors went nap with Katie Waddell's last minute strike.

West Ham United 2-1 Reading

An 11th-minute West Ham opener by Emma Thomas was cancelled out when Fran Kirby grabbed a 31st-minute equaliser.

Victory could have gone either way in a well-contested tie, but Nina Downham hit an 89th-minute winner to put the Hammers into the quarter-final draw.

Portsmouth 5-4 Aston Villa

Villa had a great start with goals in the first 15 minutes from Louise Fellows, Natasha Merritt and Kerry Manley.

Pompey were stunned, but they forced their way back into the game as Shelley Cox and Emma Hillier cut the deficit to a single goal by half-time.

Lindsey Roe then scored in the 65th and 78th minutes to put the home side in front - only for Kimberley Farrow to equalise after 81 minutes.

There was only five minutes remaining when Pompey snatched the winner, Justine Lorton putting the finishing touch to the best move of the match.

Millwall Lionesses 3-1 Coventry City

A 50th minute own goal broke the deadlock in Millwall's favour and five minutes later they doubled their advantage through Megan McKee.

Emma Beckett made it 3-0 in the 84th minute, but two minutes from time Callan Barber struck a consolation effort for the Northern Division side.

Barnet 3-2 Brighton

A stoppage time goal by Jess Primnell gave Barnet victory in a roller-coaster of a tie against Southern Division opposition.

Brighton took the lead through Kim Stenning in the 32nd minute, but a minute after the interval Sally Wade levelled the scores.

Stacey Sowden then put the top flight team in front on the hour, but it was all-square again 11 minutes from time when Sarah Kempson equalised.

There was no coming back for Brighton a second time, however, after Primnell had scored with a superb diving header a minute into added time.

Curzon Ashton 0-4 Cardiff City

Amie Lea's 18th-minute opener put the Southern Division Bluebirds on the road to the quarter-finals.

Northern Division Curzon were in the tie until the break, but second half goals by Lisa Bird, Natasha Harding and Sophie Ingle gave the visitors a comfortable win.
