Leeds kick off League Cup defence with draw

By Tony Leighton

Leeds United kicked off the defence of their Women's Premier League Cup crown with a 1-1 draw at Sunderland in their opening first-round group game.

Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Reading and Barnet all enjoyed victories over regional division sides.

But Millwall were held to a draw by Southern Division Gillingham and Watford lost at Cardiff City.

The top two teams from each of the seven groups, plus the two best third-placed sides, will go into the last 16.

Sunderland 1-1 Leeds United

Chloe Foster finished off a fine 13th-minute Leeds move with a shot that went in off the post to put the visitors in front.

Sunderland improved after the interval and Abbey Holmes equalised in the 68th minute, threading a low shot through a ruck of players to find the net.

Nottingham Forest 4-1 Derby County

Northern Division Derby took a 15th-minute lead through Marie Wayne, but Forest hit back strongly to win the East Midlands derby.

Jemma Connor-Iommi levelled the scores five minutes before the break and then second half goals came from Suzanne Davies, Lauren Cresswell and Ellie Gilliat.

Rochdale 0-4 Blackburn Rovers

In the Lancashire derby two goals in each half gave Blackburn a comfortable victory over Northern Division opposition.

Following first-half strikes from Levi Penny and Danielle Sheen, a Nicky Twohig penalty and late goal by Charlotte Farrell completed the scoring.

Gillingham 2-2 Millwall Lionesses

The Gills came back from a two-goal deficit to earn themselves a hard-fought draw through Natalie Crinean's late equaliser.

Millwall were in front at the break through Leah Jones and a Sian Cheedy own goal, but Ashlee Hincks reduced the arrears and Crinean equalised 14 minutes from time.

Cardiff City 2-0 Watford

Second-half goals by Natasha Harding and Lisa Bird ensured that Watford would be the only top flight team to lose on the first day of the Round One group fixtures.

Barnet 4-0 Colchester United

Holly Sandow hit a first-half hat-trick and then Alex Keown's late strike wrapped up a convincing Barnet victory over their Southern Division visitors.

Yeovil Town 0-2 Reading

Michaela Howell struck twice in 10 minutes midway through the first half to ease Reading past the newly promoted Southern Division side.
