Arsenal secure Women's Premier League title

By Tony Leighton

Arsenal clinched a seventh successive Women's Premier League title with a revenge win against Everton, who beat the Gunners in Monday's FA Cup final.

Right-winger Gemma Davison scored twice in a 4-2 Arsenal success that meant the Toffees dropped to fourth in the table.

Chelsea won 3-0 at Blackburn to go third, one point behind Leeds in second with that battle going to the wire.

Sunderland climbed to fifth with a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, while bottom club Bristol Academy drew at Watford.

Arsenal 4-2 Everton

The Gunners needed only one point to secure the title but took all three to complete a league double over the team who beat them in the League Cup as well as the FA Cup final.

Left-winger Rachel Yankey gave the home side a 31st-minute lead then crossed for Davison to double the lead from 12 yards six minutes before half-time.

Everton fought back after the break, captain Fara Williams firing home a 52nd-minute free-kick then striker Natasha Dowie equalising with an 18-yard shot 10 minutes later.

But Davison put Arsenal back in front with a 15-yard drive in the 78th minute, and two minutes later striker Julie Fleeting wrapped up victory with a luckily deflected goal.

Blackburn 0-3 Chelsea

Goals either side of half-time by Sophie Perry and Ann-Marie Heatherson set Chelsea up for a sixth successive league win.

Ruby Staplehurst hit the victory-clincher 12 minutes from time to keep Blues in with a chance of claiming a Champions League place alongside Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest 0-3 Sunderland

Sunderland guaranteed themselves a fifth-place finish while leaving it difficult for Forest to avoid finishing in the bottom two.

Gemma Wilson's 32nd-minute opener was followed by a Lucy Staniforth goal just after the hour and a Kelly McDougall strike 14 minutes from time.

Watford 1-1 Bristol Academy

Bristol came within 60 seconds of claiming only their fourth win of the season after Helen King had given them a 28th-minute lead.

But in their final game of the campaign, they were condemned to finish bottom when Sally Wade struck home a last-minute penalty for the Watford equaliser.
