Everton women close in on second

By Tony Leighton

The race for the Women's Premier League runners-up spot and a Champions League spot will go to Sunday's final games.

Everton are in pole position after a 2-0 midweek win at Nottingham Forest, but they must beat Blackburn Rovers to make sure of the coveted Euro place.

Should the Toffees fail, then Chelsea would finish second if they win at second from bottom Forest.

Leeds Carnegie's hopes of making it a three-horse race ended when they lost 3-0 at champions Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Everton

Two early goals set the Toffees up for an important Tuesday evening victory that saw them leap-frog Leeds into second place.

Jill Scott hit a ninth minute opener and seven minutes later Natasha Dowie added the second with her 30th goal of the season.

The result meant that Everton are in a great position to join Arsenal as England's representatives in next season's Champions League.

Arsenal 3-0 Leeds Carnegie

Arsenal moved 11 points clear at the top of the table with a fine display at their parent club's Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had been crowned champions for the seventh successive season on Sunday, but there was no letting up as they kept up their 100 per cent home record.

Scotland star Kim Little opened the scoring in the 11th minute, sweeping home a low cross from Gemma Davison.

Leeds hit back to keep themselves in contention, but a 71st minute penalty by Little - her 46th goal of the campaign - effectively wrapped up the points for the Gunners.

A 20 yard Davison drive brought the final goal three minutes from time to set up the celebrations as the League trophy was lifted by captain Jayne Ludlow.

Birmingham City 0-1 Blackburn Rovers

A fifth defeat in six matches on Thursday evening left Birmingham in the bottom three and very likely to end the season there as their last match is against Arsenal.

Blues had good spells of possession but were sentenced to defeat by Dani Sheen's 85th minute goal, victory ensuring Rovers of a seventh place finish.
