Arsenal hit nine in Euro victory

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Arsenal and Everton had mixed fortunes in the first knock-out round of the inaugural Women's Champions League.

Arsenal crushed Greek side PAOK 9-0 in Thessalonika but Everton went down 3-0 to Norwegian champions Roa in Oslo.

Scotland midfielder Kim Little hit four goals as the Gunners made next Wednesday's second leg a formality.

Everton will be hoping for better fortune in their second leg after three key players were affected by illness before their defeat.

PAOK 0-9 Arsenal

It was no contest from the early stages in Thessalonika, where England winger Rachel Yankey gave Arsenal a seventh-minute lead before Little struck a 24-minute hat-trick.

Wales striker Helen Lander scored either side of half-time, then Yankey got her second goal of the evening in the 71st minute.

Jayne Ludlow got in on the act in the 88th minute and Little bagged her fourth of the night three minutes into stoppage time.

Roa 3-0 Everton

The Toffees' problems began before kick-off as England internationals Fara Williams, Jill Scott and Emily Westwood all went down with illness.

The evening got worse for Mo Marley's team as Elise Thorsnes shot the Norwegians into a 15th minute lead.

Marie Knutsen hit the second goal five minutes before the break, and Emilie Haavi completed the scoring 23 minutes into the second half.

Everton now have the mighty task of winning the second leg, at Marine FC next Wednesday, by four clear goals to progress into the last 16.
