Cup holders Arsenal beat Watford

by Tony Leighton

Women's football

Women's Premier League Cup holders Arsenal began their trophy defence with a 4-1 first-round win at Watford, with Kim Little scoring a hat-trick.

Doncaster Belles and Everton both won 5-0 - against Leeds City Vixens and Sheffield Wednesday respectively.

Emma Whitter bagged four goals as Chelsea beat Barnet 6-2 and there was also a 6-2 win for Birmingham against Northern Division side Lincoln.

The biggest win, however, was Keynsham Town's 7-1 thumping of Crystal Palace.

Watford 1-4 Arsenal

Sally Wade shot the Hornets in front from a third-minute penalty, but Kim Little equalised four minutes later and from that point the Gunners took control.

Scotland midfielder Little doubled her score in the 26th minute and completed her hat-trick nine minutes into the second half.

And to rub salt into Watford's wounds, former Hornet Helen Lander hit the visitors' fourth goal deep into stoppage time.

Leeds City Vixens 0-5 Doncaster Rovers Belles

The Belles had victory sewn up by half-time with a 3-0 lead, Emily Simpkins putting them in front then Vicky Exley and Vanessa Leat adding further goals.

Exley got her second of the afternoon from the penalty spot before Millie Bright rounded off the scoring against the Northern Division newcomers.

Sheffield Wednesday 0-5 Everton

A second minute goal by Gwennan Harries set up the Toffees for a comfortable victory over their Northern Division hosts.

Three goals in 19 second-half minutes clinched victory, a Natasha Dowie double sandwiching a Jody Handley strike.

And in the second minute of stoppage time, England Under-23 striker Dowie completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot.

Chelsea 6-2 Barnet

It was Emma Whitter's day at Chelsea, the striker opening the scoring in the 11th minute then bagging another three goals in the second half.

Dunia Susi hit the home side's other two goals, while both of Barnet's consolation efforts were netted by Stacey Sowden.

Birmingham City 6-2 OOH Lincoln

Northern Division Lincoln were in contention until the 77th minute but, with the score at 3-1, goalkeeper Kay Hawke was sent off and Blues took full advantage.

Dannii Bird had given the home side a fifth-minute lead but Jodie Michalska equalised 10 minutes later and the scores were level until just before the hour.

After Kerry Bartlett and Jo Potter strikes had given Blues a two-goal advantage, however, Hawke was dismissed for handling the ball outside her penalty area.

Bird scored from the resultant free kick, then goals by Sian Larkin and Maz Gauntlett wrapped up victory before Michalska pulled one back in stoppage time.

Blackburn Rovers 4-2 Manchester City

Late goals by Katie Anderton and Lauren Walker gave Blackburn victory after a ding-dong battle against Northern Division opposition.

Danielle Sheen put the home side ahead after only five minutes but 10 minutes later Bethany Worth levelled the scores.

City then went ahead through a 31st-minute goal by Charlotte Farrell but Rovers took only two minutes to equalise through Natalie Brewer.

As the game wore on extra time began to look inevitable but Blackburn won as Anderton and Walker both struck in stoppage time.

Cardiff City 0-4 Bristol Academy

Two Wales internationals, 17-year-old Sharla Passariello and Loren Dykes, were on target as Academy clocked up their first win of the season.

Passariello scored twice and there was a goal apiece for Dykes and Paige Stewart in a convincing win against the Southern Division Bluebirds.

Leeds Carnegie 1-0 Nottingham Forest

A Sue Smith goal on the half-hour was enough to take Leeds into Round Two, though both sides hit the woodwork later in the game.

West Ham United 0-0 Millwall Lionesses (aet Millwall win 4-1 on penalties)

Southern Division West Ham took the game to the Lionesses but they could not force a breakthrough and the top-flight leaders were more accurate in the penalty shoot-out.
