Cynthia Uwak grabbed the equaliser for Nigeria against Sweden |
Cynthia Uwak scored late as Nigeria drew 1-1 with Sweden in their opening Women's World Cup group game. Sweden skipper Victoria Svensson put them in front just after the break, slotting past keeper Precious Dede.
But Uwak pounced on a failed clearance to slot home from 20 yards with eight minutes left.
Sweden dominated and Hanna Ljungberg hit the crossbar in the second minute, while Svensson also saw a shot hit the woodwork and bounce down on the line.
Nigeria threatened to pinch the win with a late flurry, but the draw leaves Group B wide open with all four teams on one point.
The result is an improvement for Nigeria who lost 3-0 to Sweden in the group stages of the World Cup in 2003, the Swedes eventually finished as runners-up in Russia.
The draw in Group B leaves all four teams with one point after the USA and North Korea drew 2-2 in the other Group B game on Tuesday.
The next games in Group B are on Friday with Nigeria playing North Korea while Sweden face the USA.
