O'Reilly rescued the USA with a late equaliser against North Korea |
Heather O'Reilly's rocket shot salvaged a 2-2 draw for the United States of America in their first game of the Women's World Cup against North Korea. Abby Wambach, who had earlier hit the bar with a header, put the USA ahead when North Korea keeper Jon Myong Hui could only push her shot into the net.
But North Korea fought back to level when US keeper Hope Solo fumbled Kil Son Hui's shot over the line.
Kim Yong Ae made it 2-1 from close range before O'Reilly rescued the US.
USA keeper Hope Solo let in a howler but made two fine late saves |
The USA, winners in 1991 and 1999 and pre-tournament favourites here, have never lost a game in the group stages of the World Cup finals.
They needed two good late saves from Solo to maintain that record as North Korea came close to springing a surprise.
