York City skipper Chris Smith 'gutted' by FA Cup defeat

York City

York City captain Chris Smith has spoken of his disappointment following the club's 2-0 defeat by Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup.

Despite being 98 places below their hosts in the football pyramid, it was the non-league side that created the best chances in the third-round tie.

"We weren't hanging on, we had our chances," he told BBC Radio York.

"It says something when we've come off losing 2-0 to a Premier League side and we're gutted, absolutely gutted."

The 29 year-old has been an ever present in the team since being signed from Mansfield Town in October 2010.

And Smith believes that if they had taken just one of their opportunities they could have taken a famous scalp.

"We had our chances. Before their first we had our chance and the keeper's pulled off a fantastic save to stop us going 1-0 up," he said.

"Then they go down the other end and punish us. That's what Premier League football is all about."

Smith also praised the near 5,000 supporters who followed the Minstermen across the Pennines.

"The fans were fantastic. 5,000 making the journey, they didn't shut up from minute one. Even when we were 2-0 down I thought they were fantastic, so thank you from me and everyone associated with York City.

"Hopefully we've done them proud, we did well as a team and were unlucky. It felt like we had the more fans."
