York buoyant after first friendly

Jason McGill
McGill says he is working with manager Martin Foyle to strengthen the squad

York City chairman Jason McGill was cautiously optimistic after the first pre-season friendly against Leeds United at Kitkat Crescent.

A crowd of more than 4,000 watched the game, which ended as a 3-3 draw.

McGill told BBC Radio York: "We've tried to give the manager a little bit more of a budget to get us a bit higher up the league.

"I'm quite pleased with the way it went today. It was a tremendous crowd too, which is really important for us."

He added: "I'm quite optimistic. I thought the midfield looked quality and I thought individual players stood out today.

"To get 3-3 after being 3-1 down against Leeds United was great."

McGill said work was still going on behind the scenes at the Blue Square Premier club to bring in another couple of players.

I think we've got a good manager who is very sensible and won't spend the money irrationally

York City chairman Jason McGill

"It doesn't seem that we've had a long close season. I think we've been working behind the scenes and because of [the FA Trophy final at ] Wembley it sort of extended the season for us.

"We've been working behind the scenes to try and get the players in. It's been tough and we've had one or two knock backs. We will be looking certainly at at least one more player, if not two, to strengthen the team.

"I think we've got a good manager who is very sensible and won't spend the money irrationally and the signs are looking good."
