Shepherd may start for Minstermen

Shepherd has made one start and nine substitute appearances this season

York City's Liam Shepherd could make only his second start of the season at Barrow in Tuesday's Setanta Shield tie.

The left-winger came on at half-time and inspired City to a 3-0 home win over struggling Lewes on Saturday.

Ben Purkiss, David McGurk, Steven Hogg and Craig Farrell are injured, while Christian Smith, Simon Brown and Richard Brodie are cup-tied.

Ironically, Brodie, who is the club's top scorer with 17 goals, played in the Setanta Shield on loan for Barrow.

City manager Martin Foyle told BBC Radio York: "It's a game I wouldn't want to risk Purkiss and McGurk in, but they will both definitely be fit for the Eastbourne game."

With so many players injured or unavailable, Foyle added: "It gives the others a chance and it keeps everybody fit as well because the reserve team football around here has been so poor [because of the weather]. Some of the kids haven't played for five weeks which is ridiculous.

"You throw them into the firing line and they're fatigued after 16 minutes, I'm making substitutions when I don't really want to."

On the transfer front, Foyle said he does not expect to make any further signings apart from the possible return of Adam Smith from Gainsborough, but admitted there could be departures.

"Maybe one or two might be going but I've got to balance the books," he said.
