Colin Walker is preparing for his first full season in charge
York City manager Colin Walker has told his squad they must prove they are worthy of a shirt for the first game of the new season.
Walker is still working to put his best side together for the opening match of the campaign at Crawley.
However Walker told BBC Radio York some players need to see the bigger picture.
"The season's 46 games long at least. It's not all about Crawley away. It's a campaign and in a campaign you're going to need more than 21 players," he said.
"But we just have one or two people that think that it's all or nothing on getting in the Crawley team and it isn't.
The players haven't got to try and pick the team. They haven't got to read things and think that team is already picked
York boss Colin Walker
"We've got a big season ahead and we need a squad of players to be up for it and ready for it. Hopefully the work in the week will be getting our work base for Crawley but we have a big season ahead of us - not just one game."
Walker also warned that nobody will be guaranteed a place in his first 11.
"I haven't labelled anybody. At the moment I haven't picked a team for Crawley. I think you might say that [defender] Dave McGurk might play - apart from that that's all we've done.
"The players haven't got to try and pick the team. They haven't got to read things and think that team is already picked.
"They've got to work as hard as they can to go and show me and Eric Winstanley that they want to get in the team."
