We need better players - Walker

York City

York City suffered a disappointing end to their Blues Square Premier season with a 3-0 defeat at Salisbury.

But manager Colin Walker says he is confident that his team will come back next season looking much stronger.

Walker told BBC Radio York: "We know we've got to get better people. Within the next couple of weeks I hope to have a couple of signings to announce."

After his side's poor display at Salisbury, Walker said his players need to become mentally stronger.

Friday was not the nicest day. It was very difficult. It started at 10 o'clock in the morning and finished at 7.30 at night. It wasn't nice but that's the job I get paid to do

"My disappointment is for the away fans," he said. "They've been fantastic all year and that's what they're going home with.

"That disappoints me because some of them were disappointed and showed their disappointment. But we're going to get better players in and we're going to have a better team.

"It's about mental strength. That's what we've got to be better at.

"Come 2 July, when pre-season starts, that's one of the big things we've got to work on."

Walker told his squad on Friday which players would be released and he said it was not the easiest thing he has had to do.

"Friday was not the nicest day," he said. "It was very difficult.

"It started at 10 o'clock in the morning and finished at 7.30 at night. It wasn't nice but that's the job I get paid to do."

Amongst the players that will leave KitKat Crescent is 23-year-old captain Emmanuel Panther who has spent three years with City. Walker said it was another hard decision for him.

"It's been a really strange one since January," he said. "We talked to him and he wanted to keep his options open and I think it was a little bit like Clayton Donaldson (who left York to join Hibernian at the end of last season).

"I know Clayton knew where he was going but Manny's performances just seemed to dip.

"He knew that, he was never shy of it and, at the end of the day, now we've got to move on and we've got to get better ones than that in."
