Defender Westwood joins Wycombe

Wycombe Wanderers have signed defender Chris Westwood from Peterborough United on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old former Hartlepool and Walsall stopper, who started his career at Wolves, has penned a two-year deal.

Westwood is Wanderers' third signing of the summer following the arrival of Leicester City defender Joe Cobb and Wigan midfielder Lewis Montrose.

And manager Peter Taylor hopes to make another addition to the squad before Saturday's friendly at AFC Wimbledon.

Wycombe have been searching for cover at centre-back, after losing skipper David McCracken to MK Dons.

"As soon as I heard Wycombe were interested I wanted to talk," said Westwood.

"I had a meeting with Peter Taylor, he explained his vision for the club and I think it's an exciting place to come, especially given what was achieved last season."

Westwood has been a key part of Peterborough's successive promotion campaigns to reach the Championship. And his experience of football at English football's third tier level with Posh, Hartlepool and Walsall leads him to suggest that promoted Wycombe should do all right.

"I don't think it's that much of a step-up," he said. "When you come into a new league, especially if you've just been promoted, you always start with a positive frame of mind.

"And, if you get off to a good start and keep totting up the wins then it becomes a mind-set. Teams come to your ground thinking they might get turned over.

"That's what we did at Peterborough last season. Even at times when we weren't playing that well we were turning teams over because of the mind.
