Mooney happy to carry on scoring
By Pete Oliver

Wycombe Wanderers captain Tommy Mooney might have reached football's pensionable age but he has no plans to stop doing what he does best - scoring goals.

"At 35, people expect you to knock it on the head, and have done for the last couple of years," Mooney told BBC Sport.

"But as long as someone still wants to employ me and I am still enjoying it I will carry on.

"While I am enjoying it I won't put a timescale on it and if I am scoring goals, I am happy."

Mooney is now with the seventh club of a career which has taken him from the basement division to the Premiership and back again.

He has scored at every level he has played at since being released by Aston Villa to begin his League career as a teenager with Scarborough.

And it is the prospect of more goals that prolongs his enthusiasm for the game.

"I am not going to finish until I've got 200 goals. I need another 14 and hopefully they will come this season," he said.

"That would take the pressure off and then I can look at it again. But I can't envisage not playing on a match day.

"I still love match days and the routine and while I can still hold my own, which I seem to be doing, I will continue.

The players might have had a hangover from last season - but the manager didn't

"If it's down to my decision there won't be an end to it."

After leaving Scarborough for Southend, Mooney moved inland to Watford and helped them win promotion to the Premiership in 1999.

He scored winning goals against Liverpool and Bradford before a knee injury curtailed his top-flight chances.

The Premiership briefly beckoned again following a move to Birmingham City and another promotion success, but a disagreement with Steve Bruce led to loan moves to Stoke, Sheffield United and Derby.

From there it was off to Swindon and the start of a rampage through the lower divisions which saw Mooney score 19 times for Swindon, 15 for Oxford and 19 for Wycombe in three successive seasons.

Now into his second year at Adams Park, the Middlesbrough-born forward has found the net four times to help Wycombe to the top of League Two.

As well as his appetite for goals, Mooney says sensible management has helped him stay at the sharp end.

He added: "For the last couple of years I have played for managers who have trusted me and allowed me to train three days a week.

We can't change what happened last year. We can only learn from it

"Through that I have played 50 games a season, so it's a format that seems to work.

"Also, when you get a bit older you realise you can't do some of the things you used to do. A bit of common sense prevails and I don't do everything the 21-year-olds do."

Mooney's latest manager is former Champions League winner Paul Lambert, who took charge at Wycombe in the summer following the departure of John Gorman.

Mooney has been impressed with the Scot's impact and approach and hopes this season can bring another promotion success.

Wycombe reached mid-December before losing a game last season but fell away from top spot in February and then lost in the play-off semi-finals to Cheltenham Town.

"The changes at the top of the club perhaps helped. The players might have had a hangover from last season but the manager didn't," said Mooney.

"We can't change what happened last year. We can only learn from it. We drew too many games. We were 21 games unbeaten but we never pulled away from anyone.

"Now we have just won six on the trot, which we never did at any stage last season, and this time round hopefully it will be different."
