Jones joy at Liverpool link
Wrexham and Liverpool legend Joey Jones
Wrexham coach Joey Jones says the club will soon reap the benefits of the deal which will see Liverpool playing their reserve team games at the Racecourse.

"It's a great boost to have a club of Liverpool's stature using our facilities," said Jones, who won the 1977 European Cup with Liverpool.

"Liverpool have signed a few players from Wrexham over the years, so it's nice to be affiliated with them.

"Any financial help is a lifeline. We need as much help as we can get."

He added: "Liverpool reserves have used Chester over the last couple of years and I've been there many times to watch them.

"They used to get decent crowds so it's going to be a boost because fans who support Liverpool will come to the Racecourse, and hopefully they'll come back to watch Wrexham as well."

Wrexham also revealed they were in discussions with Liverpool over the possibility of forging even closer links between the two clubs.

This could see some of Wrexham's promising youngsters moving to Liverpool's youth academy, and Wrexham giving some Liverpool youngsters a taste of first team football.

Sticking point

"I'm sure they'll be an opportunity to have a couple of youngsters from Liverpool to give them League experience," Jones told BBC Wales Sport.

"It would be better for them to play for Wrexham rather than for Liverpool reserves. Obviously I'm not the manager, Denis [Smith] is, but that would be great.

"And I'm sure Liverpool will have representatives watching our games, so there's always a chance our players can impress in front of them.

"I suppose it all comes down to money though. If we were to get players from Liverpool, we've obviously got to pay their wages.

"So with the club not being so good financially, that could be the only sticking point."
