Wolverhampton Wanderers are stronger - Karl Henry

Skipper Karl Henry believes Wolves are a stronger team this season following an opening-day win against Stoke City.

Manager Mick McCarthy spent around £16m in the summer in an attempt to improve on a 15th-placed finish last season.

"Some of the games that we played and some of the hidings we got, we all learned from them," Henry told BBC WM.

"We're definitely a stronger team and we've made some good signings too, so we're not going to get too carried away but it's a great start."

The Molineux club had not won on the opening day of a season for 11 years before the 2-1 home victory against Stoke on Saturday.

Wolves' last opening-day win came in August 1999, when a teenage Robbie Keane scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Manchester City at Maine Road, in the division that is now the Championship.

But goals from David Jones and new signing Steven Fletcher at Molineux ensured a successful start to the 2010/11 season.

"We've got that off our back now," Henry added. "Hopefully we can continue from that and kick on."

Wolves face Everton, who lost their opening game against Blackburn, at Goodison Park on Saturday.
