Maierhofer will have his surgery in Germany on Thursday
Wolves have confirmed their Austrian striker Stefan Maierhofer needs surgery to overcome a hernia problem.
They are sending the 27-year-old to Munich where he will be treated by the same specialist who helped Kevin Doyle with a similar problem last summer.
"He's been struggling with a hernia for some time, and needs to get it sorted," said manager Mick McCarthy.
If the surgery goes well then Wolves hope to have the tall striker back available before the end of January.
Maierhofer has made only nine appearances for the Molineux club since his arrival from Rapid Vienna in August.
His only goal came during the early-season defeat at Blackburn, while the low-point of his Wolves career to date was the red card he received at Everton.
