Mick McCarthy led Wolves to the Championship title last season
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy is hoping that his team can follow Burnley's example of upsetting the odds when they take on Manchester City on Saturday.
Burnley shocked champions Manchester United 1-0 in midweek, while the other promoted sides, Wolves and Birmingham City, also picked up their first wins.
"Burnley finished a million points away from United last year, but they turned them over," McCarthy told BBC WM.
"I know it was at Turf Moor, but it gives everyone that bit of hope."
However, McCarthy conceded he was hoping that the two sides promoted alongside Championship winners Wolves in May would lose.
"I was hoping they'd get beat, I'm not supporting them," said McCarthy. "When Birmingham got that penalty against Portsmouth in the last minute, I was chewing.
"But afterwards I thought 'well done' because they've come up like us and they're favourites to go down."
McCarthy will return to Manchester City on Saturday, having played at Maine Road between 1983 and 1987.
The Wolves boss believes his side can spring a surprise against the biggest spenders in the Premier League.
"We will going there to do just that," said McCarthy, who has spent around £15m on new players in the summer transfer window, in comparison to the figure of over £100m that City boss Mark Hughes has utilised.
"He hasn't got any different pressure to me because he needs to win football matches.
"His relative success is to finish fourth or above, mine is to finish 17th and above, and I think I've got the tools to do that."
