McCarthy thrilled for cup heroes

Sam Vokes and Andy Keogh celebrate
Vokes (l) and Keogh (r) were both on target for Wolves in the 2-0 win

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has paid tribute to strikers Andy Keogh and Sam Vokes for making the most of their FA Cup starts against Birmingham.

Both players scored in the 2-0 win, leaving their manager reassured about his strength in depth up front.

"They've really contributed whenever they've come on," McCarthy told BBC WM.

"They're both good players - they're only out of the team because of Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's performances this season."

I thought he was excellent - I just had this feeling he could do it. He's proved what a versatile player he is

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy on Dave Edwards playing out of position
Welsh international Vokes has now scored four goals for Wolves since his summer move from Bournemouth, despite only making three starts so far this season.

Republic of Ireland forward Keogh has found the net three times as he continues his battle to win over the Molineux club's supporters.

McCarthy was also keen praise the contribution of makeshift right-back Dave Edwards in the St Andrew's success - the former Luton midfielder agreeing to play out of position to cover for the injured Kevin Foley.

"I thought he was excellent," said the former Republic of Ireland boss. "I just had this feeling he could do it.

"I asked him, and he said he'd played there at Shrewsbury. That was enough for me. He's proved what a versatile player he is."

Wolves' reward for beating Birmingham is a home game against Middlesbrough on Saturday, 24 January.
