Wigan boss Paul Jewell is in his first League Cup final

The Latics go into Sunday's game at the Millennium Stadium as huge underdogs.

Jewell told BBC Sport: "It's a massive match, a massive day and a massive occasion for us but the most important thing to us is the football.

"We're not going there to be part of an occasion - we're going there focused trying to win a game."

Jewell's side have been one of the surprise packages of the Premiership this season, having been tipped for relegation in their first season in the top flight.

But the manager says they face a huge task if they are to take the step of winning the first major trophy in the club's history.

He added: "We know it's going to be difficult. The odds are stacked against us, but it doesn't stop us preparing to try and win a match.

"If the Wigan story was a book it would definitely be in the fiction section.

"Things like this just don't happen. It's a great story, for most people it's a fairytale. To come from where we have come from is a wonderful achievement.

"But we haven't achieved anything in terms of silverware.

"It's a great moment for us to be in a cup final, but we don't want to be cup final runners-up - we want to try and go there and win."
