West Brom show Calum Davenport interest

West Bromwich Albion boss Roberto di Matteo says he may offer former West Ham defender Calum Davenport the chance to train with them.

The 27-year-old has been unable to train after suffering serious leg injuries sustained during an incident at his family home in August 2009.

He left West Ham by mutual consent in March in order to make a fresh start.

"We're waiting for him to get in a better position and maybe come in," di Matteo told the club's website.

"The position is still the same. He's still not in a position to be able to train. He was around the place last week but not this week. We are in touch.

"It's a possibility to look at him, see how he is, and for him to get some training as well."

Former Coventry and Tottenham centre-half Davenport, who had a loan spell last season at Sunderland, suffered serious knife wounds to both legs in the incident at the family home and spent six days in intensive care.

Afterwards the former England Under-21 international was charged with assaulting his sister, Cara, and is provisionally due in court on 2 August to answer the charge.

Meanwhile West Brom have loan of Blackburn's Stephen Reid until the end of the season.

The Ireland international, 29, who can play in midfield or full-back, has made five starts for the Baggies since joining on an initial one-month loan.
