West Brom have agreed to sign Romania international centre-half Gabriel Tamas on loan from Auxerre until the summer with a view to a permanent move.
The deal for the 26-year-old is subject to him being granted a work permit.
Tamas, who was once a target for Celtic, has played in his homeland, Turkey, Russia, Spain and France.
The Baggies are hoping to complete the paperwork in time for Tamas to make his debut against Nottingham Forest on Friday, 8 January.
Meanwhile, Baggies manager Roberto Di Matteo has revealed he is watching in-form Crystal Palace winger Victor Moses.
"We are working behind the scenes and have a number of players we are watching - and Victor is one of them," he said.
"He did well against us in September, but I've known of him since before then and have watched his development."
