Cox eager to seal starting role

West Brom forward Simon Cox is keen to secure a starting berth in Roberto Di Matteo's side after scoring his first league goal for the club.

The 22-year-old's strike rounded off Saturday's 5-0 win over Watford in only his second league start for Albion.

"I don't like sitting on the bench, I like playing," he told BBC WM.

"I'm not going to rest on that, as soon as I have a bad game I think I'll be dragged off again. I have to keep consistent and get the goals."

Cox's only previous goal since his £1.5m summer move from Swindon was the winner in the Carling Cup tie against Rotherham in August.

His first league goal for the Baggies came after he missed the target with a straightforward header a few minutes earlier - a miss that saw him take his frustration out on the goalposts.

"My foot was still aching from when I kicked the post, but it was just nice to get of the mark," added the former Reading trainee.

Ex-Aston Villa striker Luke Moore was paired with Cox up front for the game at The Hawthorns, and he broke a goal-drought that had lasted almost for three months.

"He's worked hard and he's got his reward. I'm pleased for him and I'm pleased for the team," Cox added.

Head coach Di Matteo now has plenty of forward options with Roman Bednar scoring for the reserves at Burton on Monday night as he continues his return from a back injury.
