Mackay was pleased with the style of play from his side
Watford came back from a goal down to overcome Serie A side Parma at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
Goals from Tommy Smith, Danny Graham and Tamas Priskin saw the Hornets home in a 3-2 scoreline.
"In the main we played fairly well and scored some good goals," manager Malky Mackay told BBC Three Counties Radio.
"It's another step on to next Saturday and we are getting there now and to play that level of opposition and to play the way we did, I'm happy."
He added: "I am pleased in terms of the pre-season which has gone up a notch in playing a Serie A team."
Massimo Paci gave Parma the lead after tapping in a rebound following Nicolas Cordova's vicious freekick, before Smith and Graham put the home side 2-1 up at half-time.
A superb effort from McDonald Mariga was mere consolation for the visitors, following Watford's third goal on 52 minutes where Priskin stabbed home with a low drive.
