Watford won just 12 games in Boothroyd's last 12 months in charge

Watford chairman Graham Simpson feels Aidy Boothroyd needs a break after the manager's departure by mutual consent.

The 37-year-old left on Monday after three and a half years in charge and reserve-team coach Malky Mackay will take temporary charge of the team.

Simpson told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I think he's done a fabulous job.

"But I think with all managers, especially younger ones, sometimes they need a break. It's a very intense business to be involved in."

"I think he did a great job initially. To get us into the Premiership on our wage bill as he did was phenomenal.

"I don't think there's any disgrace for someone to say 'I've done three or four years and I need a break'.

"Perhaps a break isn't such a bad idea. You can take a look and see all the good things you have done and perhaps the things you need to learn from and you come again.

"I believe Aidy will definitely come again as a manager."

Mackay, 36, will be assisted by the current first-team coach Martin Hunter and former Hornets defender Sean Dyche, who is based at the club's academy.

Simpson said: "Malky has the respect of the dressing room and the management team. He's going to have a go - good luck to him.

"If he wants to apply for the job, he should do."

Mackay said: "It's a tremendous honour. I'm going to make sure we climb the league as soon as possible. We have a good group of players here."
