Hughes made over 100 appearances for Northampton Town

League One side Walsall have made Northampton Town defender Mark Hughes their first signing of the summer.

Saddlers manager Chris Hutchings has moved quickly to fill the void left by Anthony Gerrard, who moved to Cardiff City earlier this month.

Hughes, 22, made more than 100 appearances for Northampton after coming through the ranks at Everton.

"We have had him watched regularly and received plenty of good feedback," Hutchings told the club website.

"He uses the ball well and arrives here at the right age. This is the first of what we hope will be a number of new signings, as we continue to work hard behind the scenes to strengthen the squad."
