Gilmartin to make most of chance

Walsall

Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin says he wants to give manager Jimmy Mullen a selection dilemma after standing in for the injured Clayton Ince.

The 21-year-old is determined to make the most of his opportunity after three seasons working in Ince's shadow.

"It's not a very bad injury, Clayton said he'd be back after two weeks of treatment," Gilmartin told BBC WM.

The Saddlers have drafted in 22-year old Austrian keeper Albin Kajtezovic as Gilmartin's deputy.

The former Austria Under-21 international had recently been on trial at the Banks's Stadium, and has agreed a short-term contract subject to receiving international clearance.

As for Gilmartin, the Irishman is convinced the 3-2 midweek defeat at Oldham was rough justice as the game saw the Saddlers show signs of a return to form.

"It's good to see the team back in a performance where we're passing well and moving it, at times getting the better of the opposition," he said.

"Oldham are a very good side, they're up there this year, so it's clear to see that we should be up there as well.

"The players we have, the standard we have here in the team, we just need to get lucky now and kick on."
