Tranmere Rovers defender Aaron Cresswell has said summer talks with manager Les Parry gave him the belief to force his way into the side.
The 20-year-old has been an ever present in Rovers' team this season, at the expense of last season's first-choice left-back Zoumana Bakayogo.
"Les pulled me aside in the summer," Creswell told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"He said: 'You've got to fight for your place' and I feel I've done all right so far."
There had been some uncertainty surrounding Bakayogo's future over the summer, before he finally penned a new one-year contract.
In the intervening period, Creswell believes he heeded Parry's advice and is now desperate to keep his place in the first-team.
"I thought I had an all right pre-season and then I've just taken every game as it comes.
"I basically need to keep plugging away and try to stay in the team.
"Hopefully, if I can do that then it shows the team are doing well," added Cresswell.
After making just 17 appearances last season, Cresswell, a product of Rovers' youth system, is not about to start resting on his laurels.
"I've got to keep plugging away, working hard and showing the gaffer I want that space," he added.
