Defoe has come off the bench in all three Tottenham games this season |
Manager Martin Jol has hinted Tottenham may have to sell striker Jermain Defoe if he does not sign a new deal. Defoe is out of contract in the summer of 2008 and Spurs do not want a repeat of when their ex-defender Sol Campbell joined Arsenal for free in 2001.
The 24-year-old has been linked to Aston Villa but Jol wants him to stay.
Jol said: "He tells everyone he loves the club but hasn't signed a contract. The chairman said to me that he doesn't want another Campbell on his hands."
Campbell upset the club by staying until his deal at White Hart Lane expired and then joined Tottenham's fierce London rivals.

Defoe's first-team opportunities have been limited by the success of Jol's first-choice partnership of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov. The acquisition of Darren Bent from Charlton for 16.5m this summer only adds to the competition among Spurs' strikers.
However, Jol confirmed Defoe would be given an opportunity to stake a claim on a first-team place this season, if he decides to stay.
"I said to him he will have a fair chance if he signs. My only problem with him is his contract," added Jol.

"He is the only player who doesn't want to extend his contract. Everyone else is committed, I'm committed, but he doesn't even want to discuss it." Jol insists there is no favouritism at the club, adding: "I have no doubts about him, he is the best finisher around the box in England but Berbatov is probably the most skilful player in England and Robbie Keane is scoring goals and is skipper now and important to the team mentally.
"I will always make honest judgements, there is no politics."
