Byrne wants to improve Swindon's poor defensive record
Swindon caretaker boss Dave Byrne is in negotiations to try to bring two players with Premier League experience to the County Ground.
He has been given permission to strengthen the squad while the search continues for a permanent manager.
Byrne told BBC Radio Swindon he wants to sign a defender and a midfielder.
"I've spoken to the chairman [Andrew Fitton], he's given me permission to highlight one or two players to bring in in January," said Byrne.
"I've spoken to a couple of Premiership clubs and one in the Championship about one or two players and the response has been positive."
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that we've got a flaw defensively, it's something that I'm going to address

He also revealed that 19-year-old defender Callum Kennedy will make his Swindon debut at home to Carlisle on Saturday in place of the suspended Michael Timlin.
Fellow defender Jerel Ifil and winger Anthony McNamee will return to the starting line-up at the weekend.
Swindon have conceded 34 goals in their 18 games in League One this season, the third-worst record in the division.
"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out that we've got a flaw defensively, it's something that I'm going to address," said Byrne.
