Swindon candidates excite Fitton

Fitton is excited about the quality of managers who want the Swindon job

Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton says a couple of the contenders for the vacant manager's position would "blow people away".

Fitton has been drawing up a shortlist since the departure of Maurice Malpas.

He told BBC Radio Swindon: "There's a couple of names in there who'd really surprise people, in fact they'd blow them away.

"There are up-and-coming, experienced and very, very experienced managers on there," he added.

Fitton would not reveal any details about the identity of most of his targets, but did say former Swindon coach Gus Poyet has not been in touch and Aidy Boothroyd and Steve Cotterill had ruled themselves out.

Some of his targets are involved with other teams at the moment and he is not looking for an inexperienced player-manager type in the mould of former boss Glenn Hoddle who the Town chairman is hoping to talk to for advice in the next few days.

The club have spoken to around 10 candidates on their long list and are expecting to narrow this down to three or four who will have full interviews in the next seven days.

Ian Holloway, Billy Davies, Iain Dowie and John Ward have all been linked with the job.
