Swindon close in on new signing

Dave Byrne
Byrne hopes a new signing will help boost season ticket sales

Swindon assistant Dave Byrne is hopeful Town will make their first summer signing in the "very near future".

Boss Maurice Malpas is due to meet another potential target this week, and two players are considering offers.

Byrne told BBC Radio Swindon a new face will also help their drive to recruit 6,000 season ticket holders.

"We need a signing to give the fans something to buy season tickets on the back of. Hopefully, in the very near future, we'll get a signature or two."

He continued: "But it's got to be the right player. We don't want to jump in with both feet. They've got to be right for the club and they've got to be better than what we've got."

Links with Forest Green Rovers striker Stuart Fleetwood and Steven Gillespie of Cheltenham have been dismissed by Malpas, who has insisted two full-backs and a right winger are his priorities this summer.

Swindon are almost a third of the way to their season ticket target after just two-and-a-half weeks of sales - after promising to cut prices by a third if they reach 6,000.
