Marvin Emnes' Swansea City loan plea to Middlesbrough

Swansea City's south Wales derby goal hero Marvin Emnes will ask to extend his Liberty Stadium loan spell if Middlesbrough cannot give him games.

Emnes' winner at Cardiff City on Sunday earned him legendary status among Swans fans and the Dutch striker has relished playing in his month spell at Swansea.

But the 22-year-old is set to return to parent club Boro after third-placed Swansea host Bristol City on Wednesday.

"I wouldn't mind staying at Swansea as they have given me games," said Emnes.

The former Dutch under-21 international was loaned out to Championship rivals Swansea by struggling Middlesbrough's old boss Gordon Strachan.

New Riverside boss Tony Mowbray wants to assess his whole squad after succeeding Strachan last week, admitting: "I'd like to take a look at all of them and assess them, to be fair to the whole squad."

Emnes has scored just three goals in 18 starts since joining Boro for £3.2m from Sparta Rotterdam in 2008.

But the physical frontman has struck twice in four games for Brendan Rodgers' promotion-chasers.

Substitute Emnes inspired Swansea to a 2-0 win over Leicester City on his debut, scoring one and creating another after climbing off the bench at half-time.

But he wrote his name in Swansea folklore, after a relatively quiet game, as he fired in a 76th-minute winner in the 59th south Wales derby on Sunday in a 1-0 win that ended the high-flying Bluebirds' five-match winning run.

"It feels great to be a Swansea hero," said Emnes.

"We got three points in a derby and I got a goal so it was a good day for me - it was what i needed.

"Personally I need goals and games to build confidence so scoring felt great."

Emnes' loan expires on Sunday but Swansea play Middlesbrough on that day and part of the loan agreement is that he does not play against his parent club.

So Wednesday's Championship clash with Bristol City, a second successive derby for the Swans, is due to be his last before Mowbray is to run the rule over Emnes.

Swans boss Rodgers has admitted his club would "love to keep him" as he "fits perfectly into our style and our identity".

And Emnes added: "I have enjoyed my time at Swansea and it will be nice to stay.

"But I will see what is happening at Boro and see if I get any games.

"I have not met the new manager but I have a contract at Boro and want to do the best I can wherever I play.

"And if I have a chance to show myself at Middlesbrough, I will do that."

Mowbray said he will assess the Dutchman after he returns later in the week.

"He'll be back in the building on Thursday," confirmed Mowbray.

"They [Swansea] play Bristol City on Wednesday night and he will be returning to the north east after that game.

"So, we'll probably catch up with him on Thursday or Friday and see how he is feeling. Hopefully he comes back in buoyant mood and is happy to be back.

"I'll assess him over the next week or so and hopefully get him involved and hopefully he can make an impact like he has at Swansea."
