Ashley Williams joined Swansea City from Stockport in 2008

Swansea City have rejected a Leicester City bid for Ashley Williams with chairman Huw Jenkins saying the Wales defender is not for sale.

The Swans say the bid was made by ex-boss Paulo Sousa, but Williams, 26, is contracted until 2013.

Jenkins told the club's website: "We have received a bid from Leicester City for Ashley Williams and have turned it down. The player is not for sale."

Williams arrived in Swansea in 2008 from Stockport.

He initially joined the Swans on loan in March that year, became a permanent signing two months later and has become a key player for the Liberty Stadium side while recently attracting attention from elsewhere, including the Premier League.

In the process he became the club's costliest signing at that time with a £400,000 price tag that broke the previous record of £340,000 paid out to Liverpool for Colin Irwin in 1981.

Wales' current Player of the Year Williams is with John Toshack's squad ahead of their opening Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on Friday night.
