Wigan Athletic have had a fresh bid turned down for Swansea City's injured Dutch midfielder star Ferrie Bodde.

The Premier League club made a £4.5m bid for Bodde in August and the Swans have now spurned a revised offer.

BBC Wales understands Wigan could be prepared to pay up to £4.5m for the 27-year-old after add-ons.

Swans chairman Huw Jenkins said: "The terms of the payment have improved, but our stance on Ferrie remains the same and the offer has been rejected."

Bodde is still recovering from a serious knee injury and has not played since being stretchered off in Swansea's Championship defeat to Birmingham City on 21 November last year.

Jenkins told the club's official website: "Ferrie is edging closer to full fitness and we are all looking forward to seeing him pulling on a Swansea shirt again and bolstering Paulo Sousa's squad.''

The influential midfielder, who has also attracted the attention of Bolton boss Gary Megson, is returning to full fitness and is expected to return to action when Swansea's reserves play Swindon in Neath next Wednesday.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is the former Swansea supremo that is planning to raid his old club to sign one of their stars of last season.

Martinez has already signed Spanish playmaker Jordi Gomez and their top-scorer Jason Scotland after they inspired Championship Swansea to their best league finish for 24 years last season.

Bodde's old club Den Haag are set to bank half of any prospective transfer fee as part of the deal agreed with Swansea when he signed in 2007.

Jenkins spoke after his Championship club rejecting Wigan's earlier bid on 18 August, saying: "Not only have we rejected the bid, but it's an offer we wouldn't even think twice about considering.

"It certainly doesn't come anywhere near our valuation, especially when we have no intention of losing him.

"Ferrie and his agent are well aware of Wigan's interest. In fact, we have been speaking about a new deal for a number of weeks.

"The talks have been extremely positive and once Ferrie is fit and playing again then we'll be trying to tie him down to Swansea for the next few years."

Jenkins added: "Ferrie is more than happy here and is looking forward to getting himself match fit and pulling on a Swansea shirt again."

Bodde was one of Martinez's first signings when he took over at the Liberty Stadium two years ago, joining from ADO Den Haag for £80,000.

Bolton have also been thwarted in their attempts for the Dutchman after seeing a £2.5m bid turned down during the close season.

Bodde's future has been the subject of speculation for over a year. Last summer, he handed in a transfer request following interest from Derby who had two bids rejected.

He later changed his mind and signed a new Swans contract before his injury blow.

Bodde has only recently resumed light training but throughout the summer his future has remained the subject of speculation.

Martinez, in fact, told BBC Wales' Sport Wales programme last month: "Obviously if a player is in the market and he's going to move somewhere, you can understand that I know the players well and I always said that there are many players in that squad that can play in the Premier League.

"They are players that... had great seasons and it's the nature of the game, it's not because I moved into a team that the players are going to move on.

"I think it's the nature of how well Swansea City have performed in the past, they attracted many scouts, they attracted much interest."
