Swansea target midfield loan move

Swansea v Middlesbrough

Swansea 0-3 Middlesbrough

Championship bottom club Swansea are considering a dip into the loan market to cover a midfield injury crisis.

Jordi Lopez, Joe Allen, Darren Pratley, Ferrie Bodde and Tom Butler are all on the casualty list, Swansea overrun in midfield in the 3-0 Middlesbrough loss.

When asked about a midfielder coming in - possibly in time for Tuesday's visit of Reading to Swansea - manager Paulo Sousa said: "Yes, it's possible".

Chairman Huw Jenkins says finances will bear more recruits, preferably on loan.

"As you are well aware, the financial position of the club is stronger than ever with the extra income we received from Roberto Martinez's compensation and Jason Scotland's transfer," said Jenkins in the programme notes for Saturday's game.

"We have, however, spent around £1.2m in extra wages and transfer fees during the summer.

"But you can be assured that we are desperately looking to strengthen the playing squad further to give Paulo every chance to compete at the top end of the Championship table.

"We cannot forget that the loss of chief scout Kevin Reeves was a major blow to our club.

"It will take us time to replace him and build up our database once more to plan our player recruitment and ensure player signings compliment not only our existing players but our style of play as well.

"In the short term, maybe the loans market will prove the right way forward for Paulo as we set the new structure in place.

Sousa positive after Boro loss

"We have worked hard at Swansea City to recruit with care."

Sousa, whose side prop up the Championship after defeat in their first two league games, has been on the look-out for a new striker since arriving at the Liberty Stadium in the summer.

He has also suggested that the current playing squad is too large when everyone is at full fitness.

"[We need to] increase and reduce [the squad] when we have everyone fit," Sousa told BBC Sport Wales.

"We need different kinds of players in specific positions.

"I hope [that the injured players] can come back early but we won't push them, we care about the players."

This is the first time that Swansea have lost their opening two league games since 1985, but they did claim a 3-0 victory over Brighton in the Carling Cup last week.

Midfielder Leon Britton remains upbeat and confident that things can be turned around against Reading.

"We've got to make sure we all keep our heads up and we all go again on Tuesday against Reading," he told BBC Sport Wales.

"Obviously we're low at the moment but we'll pick ourselves up... we've got to wipe our memory clean and go into Tuesday in high spirits and confident that we can get a win."
