Spanish striker Pablo Counago has played for Ipswich in two spells

Ipswich Town striker Pablo Counago has turned down the chance to become a Swansea City player.

The Championship rivals had agreed an undisclosed fee for the 29-year-old former Spain Under-21 striker.

But Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins confirmed on Saturday that Counago wants to stay at Portman Road.

"We spoke with the agent but Pablo has turned down our offer, it seems he is happy to stay at Ipswich," Jenkins told the Swansea website.

"We are obviously disappointed, but Paulo [Swansea manager Paulo Sousa] has always said that he has a number of options and targets.

"Pablo's decision to turn down our offer means we will now start to pursue those options.''

Counago scored 11 goals for Ipswich last season and would have filled the gap left by Jason Scotland's £2m departure to Wigan.

Counago has spent two spells at Portman Road, playing for the Tractor Boys between 2001-5 after joining from Celta Vigo, then returning in 2007 after a spell at Malaga.
