Lee Trundle has signed a two-year contract extension with Swansea |
Lee Trundle has committed his future to Swansea until at least 2009 after signing a contract extension. The striker, who has hit 19 goals this term, negotiated a one-off image rights payment in October and was contracted until the end of the 2006/7 season.
But the 29-year-old put pen to paper on a fresh deal on Thursday that will keep him at the Liberty Stadium until he is approaching his 33rd birthday.
Trundle has hit 63 goals since joining from Wrexham in the summer of 2003.
Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins said: "There's no question that Lee has been one of our best players, if not the best, over the last couple of years and we're delighted to secure him on a long-term contract.
"This season has been his best so far, even though the mounting speculation about him around the transfer window did not help him.
"Lee is 100% committed to the cause of getting Swansea City into the Championship by one route or another and I'm confident we'll see the very best of him again now."
Trundle has been linked with moves to Everton and Portsmouth, while Swansea rejected a 750,000 bid from Sheffield Wednesday last October.
The striker still harbours international hopes of playing for the Republic of Ireland, but was left out of new manager Steve Staunton's first squad.
But that has not persuaded Trundle to abandon Swansea - chasing promotion from League One - for another club in the search for an international cap.
Trundle has missed Swansea's last two matches because of a stomach muscle strain, but should return for Friday night's vital match with promotion rivals Huddersfield at the Liberty Stadium.
