Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has warned supporters not to expect a big outlay on new players despite the departure of striker Kenwyne Jones.
The Black Cats sold Jones to Stoke City for £8m, but Quinn says there are no potential deals offering value for money in the current market.
"We took the position on Kenwyne and felt it was the right thing for the club," Quinn told BBC Look North.
"I can't see that being reciprocated in the prices being bandied about."
Quinn added: "I will not put this club at risk just to keep fans happy who don't understand, but should look at what happened to Portsmouth."
Sunderland signed have already signed a number of players this summer, including defender Titus Bramble from Wigan, midfielder Cristian Riveros from Mexican side Cruz Azul and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Belgian side Saint Truidense.
