Sunderland's David Meyler suffers knee injury blow
Meyler has featured 10 times for Sunderland this season
Sunderland midfielder David Meyler will see a specialist after scans confirmed he ruptured ligaments in his right knee in the 1-0 loss to Manchester United.
The 20-year-old was stretchered off on Sunday in the first half of the Black Cats' final home game of the season.
"He will see a specialist this week when further plans will be confirmed," manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website.
Meyler signed a new five-year deal with Sunderland last week.
It is likely that he now faces months on the sidelines and may miss the start of next season.
The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international featured 10 times for Sunderland this season and his form has earned him praise from Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni, who had called him up to the senior national squad for a training camp later this month.
He was signed from Cork City by former Sunderland boss Roy Keane in July 2008, and has made his debut against Blackburn in the Premier League in December 2009.
