Turner is hoping for more goals in Sunderland colours

Sunderland defender Michael Turner believes they have enough strength in depth to cope with the absence of key players in the Premier League.

Lorik Cana, Kenwyne Jones and Lee Cattermole are all unavailable for Saturday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

"Most teams get these scenarios during a season with injuries and suspension," Turner told BBC Newcastle.

"We've got a good squad and maybe players who haven't been involved will get their opportunities."

Having established himself as a first-choice centre-half at Sunderland, Turner is now keen to impose himself at the opposite end of the pitch as well.

The Lewisham-born defender netted five times for former club Hull City last season, and at six foot four inches represents a threat for the Black Cats from set-pieces.

And with just the one goal so far this campaign for his new club, he is hopeful of building on that tally in the coming weeks.

"It would be nice to have two or three at this stage but I'm happy to just have one," Turner added.

"Hopefully I can just keep being a threat and I'm sure I can get a few more during the season.

"Keeping a clean sheet is the goal at the start of the game but to score a goal is a great feeling and great for yourself to get your name up in lights."
