Sunderland goalkeeper Trevor Carson has signed a new contract that is set to keep him at the Stadium of Light until the end of the 2012 season.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 player is behind Craig Gordon and Marton Fulop in the pecking order for the Black Cats.
Boss Steve Bruce said of the 21-year-old on the club website: "We've seen a huge improvement in Trevor recently.
"He's still young in goalkeeping terms but he's brave, a good shot-stopper and has excellent distribution."
Bruce added: "He's relishing working with goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink and being involved with the first team and the challenge for Trevor now is to be pushing Craig and Marton for a regular place in the first-team squad."
Carson made two first-team appearances for Sunderland in pre-season and was in the squad for four games during the current campaign when Fulop was out with a heal injury.
Carson joined Sunderland in 2004 and played 20 games on loan at League Two side Chesterfield last season.
