Sunderland full-back George McCartney will be out of action for six to eight weeks after undergoing foot surgery.
The Northern Ireland defender required operations on both feet after nerve damage prevented him from playing for over a month.
McCartney will face a race against time to be fit for Northern Ireland's next World Cup qualifier against San Marino on 11 February.
The Belfast man rejoined Sunderland from West Ham in early September.
