Trouble flared after the final whistle following a pitch invasion
Chairman Niall Quinn revealed that Sunderland were "working hard" with police and stewards to produce a comprehensive report on crowd problems.
Rival fans clashed after the 2-1 win over Newcastle last month, and Magpies keeper Shay Given was confronted by two fans after Kieran Richardson's winner.
"We have to work collectively to maintain the fantastic atmosphere we are renowned for," Quinn said.
Newcastle's Joey Barton was also pelted with missiles before the match.
Quinn, talking in the programme notes ahead of the Portsmouth clash, said the club were not looking to "apportion blame".
He added: "I know that whatever problems there were at the end were caused by a variety of reasons, and I understand the emotions of the day."
The Football Association will also be compiling a report on the incidents of the game on 25 October at the Stadium of Light, which saw police make 29 arrests and an officer break a wrist.
