The Football Association is seeking a report on the crowd trouble that marred Sunderland's 2-1 victory over Newcastle at the Stadium of Light.
Newcastle keeper Shay Given was confronted by two home fans during the game, while Joey Barton was pelted with missiles before the match.
Rival fans also clashed after a pitch invasion on the final whistle.
An FA spokesman said: "We will look into the incidents. We are awaiting reports from the officials."
Police are also investigating the trouble after they arrested 29 fans, many of which were for the pitch invasions.
The violence led to a police officer suffering a broken wrist separating rival fans while a police horse was injured after being hit by a firework.
