Sunderland have confirmed that chief executive Peter Walker has resigned after 10 years with the club.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my 10 years in football and am confident that I am leaving the club in an excellent position," said Walker.

Chairman Niall Quinn said: "I think supporters should know of the important work he has done behind the scenes."

Walker joined the Sunderland board as group financial director in 2001 and became chief executive in 2004.
