Stockport County managing director Mark Maguire has resigned and left with immediate effect.

Maguire had been in the post at Edgeley Park since 2007.

Tension has surfaced in recent months with boss Jim Gannon unhappy at the need to sell players in the transfer window to balance the books.

Midfielder Anthony Pilkington joined Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee and defender Jim McNulty signed for Brighton in a �150,000 transfer.

Maguire told BBC Radio Manchester: "Relations with the club remain amicable and I continue to be a County supporter myself."

Club directors and current staff have taken charge of day-to-day duties until a successor to Maguire has been found.
