Stevenage have signed defender Darius Charles from Ebbsfleet on a two-year deal for a yet to be decided fee.

The clubs will attempt to agree on a fee for the 22-year-old but, should they fail, the cost will be decided by a Football Association tribunal.

"He is an outstanding player in several positions," said chairman Phil Wallace.

Meanwhile Chris Day, Ronnie Henry, Jon Ashton, Mark Roberts and Scott Laird have all signed two-year contracts to stay at Broadhall Way.

Wallace told the club website: "We've started at the back and are working forwards.

"We are keen to keep the nucleus of the squad that did so well for us last year and take that team spirit and momentum into League Two."

Charles, who can also operate in central midfield, started his career at Brentford where he made 37 appearances, scoring once.

He then spent time on loan at numerous non-league clubs before permanently moving to Ebbsfleet in January 2009 after a loan spell.

Stevenage won promotion by finishing the season as Blue Square Premier champions.
