Stevenage can still win league - Graham Westley

Graham Westley
Westley has led his side to second place and an FA Trophy semi-final

Stevenage manager Graham Westley believes that the Blue Square Premier title is still in his side's hands.

Borough go into Wednesday's game with Wrexham trailing Oxford by six points.

Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio: "Nobody is going to win all their games between now and the end of the season, so it is in our hands.

"It is going to take a mighty effort from one club and everyone here is just concentrating on putting their effort into winning the next game."

He added: "The only thing that really matters is winning your own games. If you win your own games, then you give yourself a chance of silverware.

"We have some big games that we will have to win and there are a lot of games in a very tight fixture schedule.

"One team will step up to the plate and will win more points than anyone else and will go on and be champions.

"We are getting ourselves ready for everything, even to the smallest detail, in the right way, and if you keep concentrating on winning, you give yourself a chance for honours."

Stevenage added Tim Sills in the transfer window, but have resisted wholesale changes in an attempt to boost their promotion challenge, with the manager putting his trust in the squad that was largely assembled last summer, but he has not ruled out the possible need of dipping into the loan market.

He said: "On the one hand you have to ask yourself if you are in the position where and emergency loan is allowable, and secondly is the money going to be available. We've got a squad that has worked very very hard for us.

"There is a degree of inevitability that says you are going to take knocks when you are playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, maybe Thursday. Under those circumstances there might be a need for emergency and hopefully the board will see the way clear to produce the funds.

We're not Luton or Oxford, with 7,000 to 8,000 people coming through the gate every week, and that makes the players' achievements so far even more remarkable

Stevenage boss Graham Westley

"I'm not going to complain if they don't, it's been a tough year. We have had to do a lot to to cut our cloth accordingly. We can make a budget that the directors are prepared to handle.

"We're not Luton or Oxford, with 7,000 to 8,000 people coming through the gate every week, and that makes the players' achievements so far even more remarkable. Hopefully we can muster enough points in the games going forward to do something incredible, only time will tell. "
